Our Story

In 1980, Charlottesville Dance Studio owner Juanita Wilson helped create “The Virginia Dance Club” at UVA with the hope that the student-run organization would allow incoming dancers to maintain and expand their dancing skills. The first performances were held in the old Amphitheater situated in front of Bryant Hall.  At the end of each semester, the Company performs in the Old Cabell Hall Auditorium, showcasing 10-15 student-choreographed dances.

Since its creation, the company has held auditions in both the Fall and Spring, attracting highly skilled dancers of many backgrounds. Now known as DCO, the organization has advanced far beyond its creator’s initial idea, and has become a well-respected and revered dance company. Presently, the company rehearses year-round, performs consistently throughout the University and Charlottesville, and boasts an average of 30 talented members.
